Amy Wilson - Interactive Art

I have been a huge fan of Amy Wilson for a long time. I even got to interview her for my Inspiration of the Month feature back in 2008.

She has managed to delight me yet again with her interactive flash game, It's Like This Every Day. Its a small point and click game that is deceptively harder than it first appears. Her watercolors draw one in and the narratives hidden within the game carry you to times past and inner landscapes that are haunting and mysterious. The game has everything that is wonderful about Wilson's art.

If that wasn't enough, she has a limited edition of art stamps that shes giving away to the first 10 people who complete the game (and take screen shots of the game items). As of this writing, there were still 7 stamp sets left!

Pollock - the movie

It feels wrong to admit that I am not a fan of Jackson Pollock's artwork. He was such a pivotal force in the art world and I cannot deny his impact. While I am grateful for his vision, I'm just not fond of his paintings.

I adore this film though. What an intimate and loving portrayal of Pollock's incredible career as well as his struggle to really live. Its a finely crafted film with incredible performances and rich characters. I highly recommend it, and you can find it on Netflix Instant.

The Sketchbook Project - a mother daughter collaboration

My daughter and I have been bonding over art a lot lately, so we decided to collaborate on a project together.

We ordered books from The Sketchbook Project for their 2012 Limited Edition series. They sent us the blank sketchbooks, we chose our themes, and are ready to fill them with artistic goodness over the course of the next two months.

We will then mail the sketchbooks back and they will become a part of the Brooklyn Art Library permanent collection. Its an exciting way to get our art out into the wild.

Murmuratio - the beauty of emergent behavior

Its no secret that I love birds, but when you add their emergent behavior its a visual feast for the soul. This video is a stunning example of the power and beauty that nature provides us. What appears to be a simple canoe trip becomes transcendent as the girls run across a flock of thousands. No matter how many times I watch it, it always takes my breath away.

I gasped when I watched this video. What initially appears like some lovely paint work transforms into fleshed out fish the moment the resin is poured. Its truly magical and I am itching to pull out my own resin to try my hand at this technique. (my previous resin experiments here and here)

Blue Jay strutting

I've got a handful of projects in the works. Sometimes its hard to keep myself motivated on the larger pieces because they take so long to complete. Having some smaller paintings to work on keeps the juices flowing.

I just love this blue jay. He seems so proud of himself and I love his blue plumage against the green backdrop. I have a few more birds in the works and when I finish this next set I'll drop them off at the gallery. I'm thinking that at the end of the year I'll create a small calendar of my bird paintings for 2013.

Crafting and the new year

Its been a while! I think I burned out on trying to blog 6 days a week, and then my kids hit some major transitions that needed more of my attention... and before I knew it, the gap had widened so far that it was hard to return.

I wasn't idle during those quiet months and the holidays had me crafting just for the joy of it!

As my son is a ballet dancer, we have a collection of over 25 nutcrackers since everyone seems to believe that its the perfect gift. I decided to give it my own spin this year and made a Fighting Pickle nutcracker! UNCSA has no sports teams, so the mascot has always been tongue in cheek.

We love to make our own ornaments for the tree. I still have the paper stars the kids colored with crayon back when they were toddlers. These felt stars were a blast to create and I anticipate doing a whole lot more in coming years. My daughter has especially taken to embroidery and is now crafting plushie mustaches!

The holidays are over and with the new year, I have new goals. I'm glad to be back, and I intend to keep my posting to 3 times a week. Hopefully this will spell success for my longevity. Thanks for hanging in there with me. :)

A full life

I missed you all last week! I had some unavoidable health issues, and then we had the terrific pleasure of driving out to pick up my son from school - all of which prevented me from updating here like I had wanted to.

My son is a ballet dancer who attends UNCSA for their high school dance program, and he just completed his freshman year. We are incredibly proud of him, and he has LOVED his time there so far.

Its so nice to have him back home, as brief as it is. In a couple of weeks, we have to drive him down to Miami for his 5 week intensive with the Miami City Ballet. A dancers life is a full one, and we don't get to seem him much anymore.

Link of the Day - Jonathan Harris : Today

I've always enjoyed the photos from folks who participated in Project 365 and DITL. There is something really intimate and telling in such pictures and I always feel that I know the individual better than I otherwise would have.

Jonathan Harris takes his project to another level in this short film. He narrates as all of his gorgeous and otherworldly images pulse from one to the next. We get to hear his feelings on the work, the process and how it evolves into its own philosophy. Its moving and all together wonderful.

Swap goodness

I've been having such a good time swapping mail art with Jessica Gowling! Last time we traded one of my postcards for her wonderful first zine. This time, I received her envelope full of original art and delightful ephemera!

In turn, I sent her a mini print, an original drawing, and some paper goodness of my own.

There really is something magical about getting a little bit of art magic in the mailbox. Anyone else want to swap? :)

Studio time

I wanted to share with you how I organize my paint tubes. I got cheap little crates from the dollar store and turned them on their side so that all my tubes would face out. Because they are tubes, they taper, and I haven't found them to work so well standing up.

I also painted the tops so I could easily see which color to grab as I'm painting, which is awesome in more ways than I can describe. Being such a visual person, it really helps to be able to see what I want as I'm mixing colors without really having to think about it.

Link of the Day - Between the Folds

Origami is far more than paper cranes these days. With a thriving community that pulls the best of art and engineering together, the boundaries are getting pushed further and further in ways that are both beautiful and exciting.

The documentary is a little slow paced, but I recommend sticking with it because it really does deliver. Just seeing what can be done with a single fold is worth the price of admission.

To add to the story, there is a copyright dust-up between popular origami artist Robert Lang (seen in the documentary) and contemporary artist Sarah Morris. Morris took the folding patterns from dozens of origami creators and turned them into vibrant 2D paintings that have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Lang and others are suing Morris for copyright violation.

Copyright in the artistic domain has always been a tricky issue. It will be interesting to see how the issues of derivative vs. transformative work shake out in front of a judge.

Lost my stride

Have you ever been in a rhythm of life that works and supports you, only to lose it? That just happened to me! I had an art groove goin on, and I was able to keep pushing forward in spite of family obligations, mini meltdowns, and all those obstacles that life inevitably throws at us.

I had the most amazing weekend. I cleaned the house with my kids until it was sparkling and ran all the important errands on Saturday. Then on Mothers Day I went kayaking on three lakes for several hours.

We saw different kinds of heron, red-wing blackbirds, canada geese, humming birds, yellow finches and a big fat groundhog.

There was grand adventure when we found our own hidden pond through the brambles, off of a main lake. It took me back to my childhood and longing for my own Secret Garden.

It was all so beautiful, and like being pulled into another world - which has kindof been my problem. I can't seem to find my footing back in my daily reality.

Hopefully I can find my way back soon. In the meantime, I'll be daydreaming of being on the water with the sun at my back, the scent of spring flowers, and birdsong filling my ears.

Artists Against AIDs success!

We went to the public opening of the Artists Against AIDs show to scope out where my paintings landed, and to see what our other talented area artists had submitted.

It's a huge event this year with 11,000 square feet of space used to house as much art as humanly possible. It certainly made for a rich visual experience.

As I spied my bird paintings, I caught some women talking about them and I went over to introduce myself. Turns out, she was buying this painting on the spot! How fun is that?!

Well I was so excited, and later conversation revealed that shes a local gallery owner who would like to have more of my little canvases in her space! What serendipity!

Its been an extremely exciting art week for me. I get to go in tomorrow to pick up any remaining art that didn't sell and a check for those that did. It feels a little like Christmas morning. :)

Inspiration of the Month - Darla Jackson

I love to use animals in my work because I think they convey the entire range of human emotion. You can imagine then how awestruck I was when I first saw Darla Jackson's sculpture! Her work is so expressive and each subject has more than enough to share with the viewer. I am captivated and haunted by the beautiful vulnerability threaded through each piece. I hope someday to bring one of them home.

What are your main inspirations in art?

I am inspired by everything from movies, artists, music, etc to random stories I read on the internet, but three of my biggest inspirations have been Disney movies (all of them...seemingly so lighthearted but most are actually quite dark), Eminem lyrics (what can I say :), and my husband Justin, who is also a sculptor, who continues to push me (and my work) to the next level.

What is your art background? (education, experience, etc)

I graduated from Moore college of Art & Design in 2003 with a BFA in Sculpture. My first job out of college was as a scenic sculptor for Kitchen Sink Fabrications and this was essentially my dream job. I was paid to sculpt animals all day, including a maquette for a 14 ft high baby chicken that now lives in the State Museum of Harrisburg in a children's exhibit. From there I went on to teach figure and animal sculpture classes at the Community Arts Center in Wallingford, PA and the Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia, PA (I still teach at Fleisher). I also have taught at Stockton College in Pomona, NJ and currently teach at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. I've been showing my work since leaving Moore in 2003 and show often in Philadelphia and the surrounding area, and as far away as Tremelo, Belgium.

What is your process for creating your work?

I always start by sketching...sometimes the image comes to me first and sometimes the idea comes to me first. If the image comes to me first, I just start making it and try to figure out the meaning along the way. If the idea comes first, I research what animals I might want to use to express the idea and look up any symbolism related to the idea (I'm a big fan of symbolism...). I start by sculpting the piece in clay first, then making a mold of it. I cast the final piece in either Gypsum Cement or Polyurethane Resin. Once the piece is cast and cleaned up, I patina it with a graphite finish. Any other elements are added at this time (i.e. party hats).

What is the single most important thing you want to communicate with your work?

The single most important thing for me to communicate with my work is some kind of connection with the viewer. Most of my work is meant to show human emotion and when a viewer identifies with the piece I feel that its successful.

What are your career goals?

My current goals are to continue making new bodies of work and finding new venues in which to show them. I'd like to branch out to the West coast and galleries in Europe. I'm also interested in doing larger installations...full houses/buildings, outdoors, etc. In addition to those goals, I love working with other artists and have some plans for future collectives and artists groups!

What one object has been the most instrumental in helping you achieve what you have so far?

Does my husband count? He has been amazing, helping me with molds, armatures, critiques, installation, deinstallation, you name it. I wouldn't have gotten nearly as much done without his help and support.

Tell me three random things about you.

I hate slugs.
I am irrationally terrified of zombies.
I used to be a power lifter and a tattoo apprentice.

Link of the day - In the Realms of the Unreal

Outsider art is a term often used to refer to primitive stylized work. Real outsider art is more rare than what is found in the marketplace these days. These are artists who create for motivations purely their own, without feedback or compensation from the greater art world.

Henry Darger is just such an artist. With a tragic childhood behind him, and a difficulty relating to people, he created his own world in order to confront his demons and live out his fantasies. When he passed, he left behind 15 large tomes (he liked to collage phone books) totaling 15,145 pages of his illustrated novel!

The documentary is a vivid summary of his life and his work. The filmmaker animates Darger's wonderful characters to make his novel come alive in a way that Henry's real life never could be. Its a poignant and sad story that is beautifully handled and I marvel at the strength of Henry's spirit as he tried to rework his bleak existence.

This is my first time working with polymer clay, and I'm really rather pleased with the results. I know there is room for refinement, but as a first stab at it - I think he came out splendidly. I am mulling over using clay to start making art dolls again.

Link of the day - Scott Avett and relief printmaking

The Avett Brothers are one of my favorite bands. We classify them as "punk-grass" for their frenetic energy in concert and their bluegrass leanings.

In addition to being a remarkable musical artist, Scott Avett has a BFA from East Carolina University. His drawings, paintings and relief prints are all wonderful. (although not easy to find, now that he's taken down his art website)

This video shares a behind the scenes look at some of his print making, as he creates the 2011 tour poster for the band. Its impressive in its detail and its size - definitely worth watching.

Dropped off my paintings

I bundled up all my paintings and prints, with paperwork in hand, and dropped them off at Artists Against AIDs' new location. I was directed to a table with a volunteer, and she went through my inventory and matched them up with the items on my forms. It was really streamlined, and I was in and out in a handful of minutes. Gotta love a well organized process!

Then a separate volunteer arrived and whisked the artwork off to be sorted into batches, and hung later. You can see the art stacked up on the walls behind the table there. They get thousands of submissions, and rotate work in as stuff sells. Its an amazingly well oiled machine and means that you can go to the show multiple times and see completely different work!

I put up individual photos of my bird paintings on my Flickr account, if you want to see them in more detail.

Now I'll be working my tail off to get this month's Nibblefest entry done in time! After that, I can breathe a little more freely once again. I look forward to being able to work on my larger Dreams painting. :)

I finally finished all of the birds, and just in the nick of time too. All of them used the painters tape technique, and I really like the results. I will drop these off, along with some prints and older paintings, later this afternoon. I'll be sure to take pics and share that process with you too.

50% of all the proceeds go to AIDs education and support of AIDs victims. Fingers crossed!

Link of the day - We Live in Public

My husband is an IT guy and my eldest son is a hardcore math/anime/video game kid. I have a love for science fiction and more - so its not a stretch to say that the geek dynamic runs pretty strong in our household. I have found so much overlap with art and geek culture, and its really special to find both highlighted in this film.

Josh Harris was an early dot.com millionaire that took his payout and turned his focus to blending art culture and internet broadcasting. The movie starts out normally enough, but as Harris's obsessions grow, his goals and the movie begin to take a dizzying turn.

Harris's love for art turns him into a creator, using the public as his canvas when he sets up a closed community in NYC - where absolutely *nothing* is private. When that project ends, he turns the tables and broadcasts his own private life into a public spectacle. Both are fascinating experiments that exemplify the relationship between art and the viewer, and how each role impacts the other.

I love love love this documentary and like all converts, think everyone should watch it. There is just so much to glean from this movie! It's not hard to find - you can watch We Live in Public on Netflix streaming, or Hulu has the whole film available now.

Boneyard Arts Festival

April really seems to be Art Month in my neck of the woods with event after event. It really serves to fill up my creative reserves for the whole year. This weekend it was the Boneyard Arts Festival when our local businesses team up with area artists and a grand art crawl, of sorts, ensues.

We wove in and out of cafes, boutiques, and various retailers looking at the art that graced their walls. We heard didgeridoos in concert & saw break dancers performing.

The real treat came when we stumbled upon the artist studios. I just love seeing how creative people set up their spaces. The nooks and crannies full of things that inspire them and the tools of their trade. One of the studios, seen above, had an entire corner devoted to the lushest plants Ive seen outside of a garden store!

I love my little studio in my bedroom. It certainly is convenient, and I can paint in my pjs if I want to. That said, I miss the instant community found with having studio space surrounded by other artists.

Kris Cain

We got the chance to speak with a couple of artists in their studios. Kris was new to her space and so welcoming. I find her work exciting, vibrant and interesting. She doesn't have a website set up yet, but I hope she does soon because I'm dying to see the rest of her work.

Judy K. Dethmers

We met briefly with Judy who was in high demand with the other art crawlers. Her work defies expectations with a level of precision and grace. Would you believe those portraits behind her are done in colored pencil? Truly amazing!

We had a grand time at Boneyard and look forward to the next one, to see what everyone is up to in a years time.

Artists Against AIDs - WIP

Just wanted to share where these little bird paintings are headed. I was inspired by Stanka Kordic's negative space leaves, and decided to experiment with them using painters tape.

The leaves on the left painting have been finished, and the leaves on the right are in process. The yellow is where the tape is pulled off. The upright painting is still getting tape cut and put in place. I'm still working on the birds themselves. :)

I am just loving where this is going, and anticipate using this technique in the future and with larger paintings!

Link of the day - every image has its own story

The idea that art is subjective is certainly true, but I think it's also important to realize that each picture has its own story, independent of the viewer. This video poignantly reveals the life behind the snapshot and reminds us to look beyond our first impressions.

Artists Against Aids

I'm already behind the curve ball with these little paintings. My mom stayed with us for her post surgery recovery, and taking care of her became my number one priority. I'm happy to say that shes healing really well, and is back home today. I took her to her first post-op appointment, and the doctor said glowing things about her progress. Yay!

So now I have to meet the deadlines that have piled up in the interim. Gack! One of those is our local Artists Against Aids show. I love to participate in this wonderful cause. Its an issue near and dear to my heart and I feel lucky to have a way to lend my talents for Aids research.

I want to have 6 new little bird paintings in addition to some of my older work. This is the beginnings of them, and I have to really put my nose to the grindstone to get them all done in time! Fingers crossed!

John Gallaher and the Ninth Letter

We were fortunate enough to go to an event hosted by the The Ninth Letter. There was sumptuous food to nosh on, art on display, and the opportunity to leaf through several copies of the arts and literary magazine.

They introduced John Gallaher who read from his book Your Father on the Train of Ghosts. He was so personable, and easy to be around. He told stories about his writing process and collaboration with G.C. Waldrep and explained that he liked to write the same way he speaks, so you really get the sense as he reads that you're hearing the same voice that occurs in his mind as he writes. This made for a very intimate experience as we heard his words pour over us, as if we were all sharing the same headspace as he wove them for the first time. (you can hear him in the video below)

We so enjoyed this experience. I really believe that, as an artist, I need to expose myself to a variety of disciplines outside of my own. This makes me a better creator as I am able to change my perceptions to overlap the filters of writers, dancers, and actors.

Inspiration of the Month - Stanka Kordic

I just love the ethereal romanticism found in Stanka Kordic’s gorgeous paintings. Each piece carries a moody tenor that blankets the viewer like morning fog and I find it both haunting and intimate.

What are your main inspirations in art?

Sorolla, Cassatt, Sargent, Seraphine de Senlis, Rothko, Diebenkorn

What is your art background? (education, experience, etc)

BFA, The Cleveland Institute of Art. Major in Illustration, Painting Minor. A few workshops here and there. I freelanced as an illustrator right out of school for a number of years (after traveling in Europe), a brief stint painting landscapes, over a decade as a commissioned portrait artist. Now this. I'm happiest here, doing my own thing with no one dictating anything.

What is your process for creating your work?

I drag my models around outdoors, usually parks, sometimes my own yard and take tons of photos. In reviewing them, something triggers the inspiration for the actual painting, whether it be an expression, an element of lighting, composition. Rarely though, is it all in one shot. That's just the starting point. I will usually change 80% of the photo around (color, etc) spontaneously. That's the intuitive part. Whether it be using tape, or sometimes bits of leafing, it all morphs as I go, and I can't predict the outcome :).

What is the single most important thing you want to communicate with your work?

Letting the viewer know that 'all will be well'.

What are your career goals?

To sell a painting or two on occasion.

What one object has been the most instrumental in helping you achieve what you have so far?

A space to work uninterrupted when I need it to be.

Tell me three random things about you.

I need at least 7 hours of sleep to feel normal.
I love water, but not being in it
I used to hang out in closets with windows, and the attic as a kid.

We watched another art documentary nominated for an academy award this weekend! Waste Land is about contemporary artist Vik Muniz who creates his imagery out of unconventional materials. (chocolate, cotton, sugar, etc..) The film documents his journey to return to his home in Brazil and work with the garbage pickers of one of the worlds largest landfills, in Rio de Janeiro. With their help, he creates their portraits out of the garbage they collect, and inexorably they change one anothers lives.

I really wanted to enjoy this movie more than I did. The work he does is interesting, the story of these workers is compelling, and the relationships they create can be really touching at times - that said, the whole movie can felt a little flat and the pace is rather slow.

I still recommend it, but I wish I hadn't had "academy" level expectations when I watched it.

Beware the twine!

Just wanted to share the set piece that I finished for my daughter's musical. They gave me the frame and I cut and tied all the sticks together with twine!

She's in a local production of Seussical the Musical, and this is Horton's jail! :) It looks simple enough, but it took me two full days and I had some pretty raw hands afterward. (twine will rub your skin off if you aren't careful!)

Spring break is over come Monday, so normally I would be able to go back to working on my Dreams painting - but my mom is having foot surgery and will be staying with us for a week while she recovers. I have some small projects to work on and a whole lot of web work, so stay tuned!

Its spring break for my kids this week, and I have been caught up in their activities. We've been watching movies together (started Twin Peaks with them!), spring cleaning the house, and enjoying each others company. Its a nice realization to discover how much I like my kids. :)

My daughter is in a park district musical and needed a zebra costume for one of her scenes. So this week I painted on a thrift store jacket to make it all zebra-y. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out.

I skipped across this feature of Chris Sauter's work and was entranced. I so empathize about the pain he goes through during creation! Sometimes its only the promise of the result that keeps me going.

His juxtapositions are also sublime - the patterns of our universe from the tiny to the expansive being made of the same stuff, the literal framework of our world. I love it!

Nora Chipaumire - Welcome to Zimbabwe

I feel very lucky to live where I do. We have a thriving arts community here, and there are so many free public events to keep me inspired and invested.

Last week we got the chance to see Nora Chipaumire. Shes a dancer from Zimbabwe who blends traditional steps with modern choreography. Her work draws from current affairs, feminism, and cultural heritage.

We were first treated to a screening of the art film based on her life. It was visually brilliant, the story was touching, and I enjoyed the pace and texture of the movie.

For me, the real prize was watching Nora dance. We saw selections from three of her works; Chimurenga, Welcome to Zimbabwe, and Black Swan. I found her style very powerful and seemed to draw from breath, dirt, and a guttural desire.

Life imitates art - the Up balloon house

I loved the fantasy and heart found in Pixar's movie Up. What a treat it was to see that a team from National Geographic engineered a way to make the fantasy reality.

With the help of volunteers they built a lightweight house, attached a bunch of ginormous helium balloons, and let two brave souls fly their creation 10,000 feet into the air!

I find so much hope in this project. You really can imagine anything and with the right resources and determination, make it happen. That's a wonderful message to carry with me to my studio today.

I have really been enjoying the palette meme that has been traveling the interwebs! This time I'm sharing an article from the Telegraph about the virtues of preserving the palettes of old masters. They show the palettes of Renior, Seurat, Degas, Van Gogh and more!

Oh my gosh - Aaron Zenz and his kids are the cutest family ever! After watching Exit Through the Gift Shop, they decided to participate in their own public art show.

Zenz and his 4 amazing children painted 48 rocks and deposited them throughout their community. He took the most delithgful photos of the pet rocks in their new habitats. You really must go see them!

This has me thinking. I've got to think up something to art bomb my city with. Any suggestions?!

It's finally starting to come together

I'm nearly there now, its all just down to the glazing. This phase is frustratingly slow, because I make such subtle changes and they need a good long time to dry before I can work over them again.

This painting has been a real challenge for me, and I will be so glad when its done! I really think its just around the corner.

I have always felt that you can learn *so much* from watching people create their art. There is nothing I'd like to do more than travel the country and just sit in peoples studios and watch them work. I just know I would be a better artist as a result!

Thank goodness for youtube and time lapse video. Here we get to peek in on Mark Ryden at work, creating a large and luscious painting from his 2010 series The Gay 90'S: Old Tyme Art Show.

I don't know about you, but seeing masters at work like this makes painting seem achievable. I can't wait to reach that level of ability.

I love seeing inside artist studios. I think it reveals so much about the personality of the artist, which is then reflected in the work they create. It also gives a peek into the process the artist uses as well. How cool is that?

So I was thrilled when I fell upon this link via Twitter this morning! The Huffington Post has two articles sharing artists' palettes and their work - one showcasing New York and one highlighting California.

I thought I would jump on the bandwagon, and share my own palette! I paint with acrylic and LOVE lots of color. I use a cut piece of plexiglass for the palette itself, and always keep old towels nearby. My water dish is a bit gamey, but has served me well all of these years.

Inspiration of the Month!

I stumbled across David Carmack Lewis's paintings a while back, and immediately fell in love with their luminescence. There is something entirely seductive in the narratives he weaves, and I find myself easily lost within them.

What are your main inspirations in art?

My inspiration now is primarily the night. It's about how different kinds of light completely change the world. My work is a kind of story telling. For me it's all about the mystery.

If you mean what other artists influence me... well, Ray Bradbury once said about writing that style is something one developed gradually by trying to copy other people's styles. I suspect this is true of me. I've tried to emulate so many at one time or another over the past 30+ years that it would be impossible to pick out the ones whose influence has really stuck. I can give you a big fat list if you want.

What is your art background? (education, experience, etc)

I studied illustration and design in Virginia. My main goal originally was to write and illustrate children's books. I never got very far with that. I did freelance illustration for a number of years and was a staff artist at a newspaper for a while. Then a friend introduced me to a gallery for artists who were just getting started in their careers. I sold my first couple of paintings. They were pretty awful actually. But the idea that I could make money drawing what I wanted... well, that was that.

What is your process for creating your work?

I staple a canvas directly to the plywood wall of my studio, prime it and then just start drawing. I almost never begin with sketches or studies (although I do sometimes photograph a place that I think would make a good setting like under a bridge or something). I work and rework the idea and image directly on the canvas changing things all the way through.

I stretch the painting on canvas later wrapping some of the image around the sides so that it will look good without a frame.

What is the single most important thing you want to communicate with your work?

What I'm always trying to capture is something pretty ephemeral and hard to put into words. Which is why I paint. but it has something to do with lying in my bed at night when I was 12 and staring at the shadows of tree branches waving across my window and thinking how unfair it was that we had to sleep at night.

What are your career goals?

Like a lot of artists I have a job to make ends meet. My only real goal is to lose the job and be able to support my family with my art (without sacrificing the integrity of making images that I honestly care about). But no matter what, it's my intention to make those images until I can no longer hold a brush.

What one object has been the most instrumental in helping you achieve what you have so far?

Stubbornness. It's not an object, I know, but it's the truth.

Tell me three random things about you.

I work full time and paint in the evenings.
I have a two year old daughter.
Fortunately, I'm a hermit.

Oscars - Exit through the Gift Shop

I had a family Oscars party last night, and in spite of the lackluster show, we had a glorious evening. I cooked all day long and provided lots of foodie fare, complete with champagne. (thanks Tastespotting!)

We had seen all of the Best Picture films this year and two of the feature documentaries, so we were pretty invested in the lineup.

One of my favorites was Exit through the Gift Shop. Its really a movie within a movie, that might just be a hidden conspiracy.

It starts out innocently enough, featuring a filmmaker who stumbles upon the shadowy world of graffiti artists - which is interesting within its own right. But then the film takes on a life of its own when the filmmaker becomes an obsessive collaborator and eventually a 'mass market' graffiti art world elite. Its a lot like falling down a rabbit hole.

The movie is produced by Banksy, a notoriously anonymous graffiti artist who is highlighted in the film. His work has heavy political and satirical tones, and one begins to wonder if the filmmaker in the documentary is just another one of Banksy's social commentaries about art and consumers. That subtle tension just adds to the color of the movie, and makes for a glorious romp.

I had really hoped that the film would win an oscar, and we might be graced with some of Banksy's spectacle onstage.

Getting closer

I am getting a lot closer to being finished with this painting. The face has really given me all kinds of trouble and I expect it still will, but I'm feeling a lot better about the direction its heading.

I'm disappointed about not having it done in time for this months Nibblefest, but it was a worthy goal and I feel good about this piece as a whole.

I won't have much time to paint this weekend. My mom is coming over tomorrow to watch the Academy Awards with us and I want to cook something special for the event. So today is consumed with meal planning, shopping and deep cleaning the house. Not as much fun as arting, but like a completed piece, should feel great once its over!

Yay - I've been included in two treasuries today! I've been working overtime to connect more thoroughly with other artists online, and feel like this is a first sign of success.

In that light, I'm really trying to hash out an art routine that fits into the rest of my life. This is turning out to be a lot more complicated than it sounds. How many hours a day do I spend on painting? How many do I spend on the business side? I tend to go feast or famine (currently in the overdoing it stage), but I really want some kind of middle road so that I don't burn out over time and neglect my other responsibilities.

I've been goaling to paint 2 hours a day, but have been working closer to 5 hours a day. Of course, I'm spending another 5 hours working on my blog, twitter, networking with other artists, prepping prints, and a whole lot more.

This makes me hugely curious about the habits of other artists. How much time do others spend creating versus building the business?

I worked 6 hours on Saturday and over 11 hours on Sunday in an attempt to finish my Dreams painting. I got really close, but then overworked it in disastrous ways. Oh the trials and tribulations of creative life.

I took a break today after that grueling schedule and worked on figuring out how to use my awesome art printer. I learned all kinds of new things about Photoshop (and I've had it for 6 years!) as well as its interface with my Epson 1400.

This means I'm ready to make prints of my favorite paintings available now! I'm starting with one I identify with the most, Wallflower. I have it available as an 8 x 10, and several art proofs at steeply discounted prices. (It really did take me a while to figure out the printer. My learning curve can be your gain.)

My 14 year old son is going to school, several states away, at UNCSA for their ballet program. We're terribly proud of him, but miss him horribly.

Well this summer has definitely flown by! I've been far busier than I ever anticipated, so all of the projects I had hoped to have under my belt by now, are languishing.

I did manage to get started on one a couple of them, however. I signed up for A Prompt A Day journaling project run by Kelly Kilmer to do with my daughter. I thought it would be a great way to spend some time together doing an activity we both love.

We were able to set aside one day to start the project, and when we return from Florida, I hope to make it a weekly event.

Inspiration of the Month!

I've been a huge admirer of Angie Reed Garner's for years! I am the proud owner of three of her paintings, and I have the pleasure of seeing them every day in the spaces I find the most comfort in. Her work is vibrant, luscious, all of them have a compelling story to tell.

What are your main inspirations in art?

My most recent series was influenced by Hundertwasser, his pulsating lines, refusal of right angles and humanist ideas about art.

I read a lot of nonfiction and I'm trying to carry over things I admire, to challenge myself to be as clear and direct in my work as possible. That does not necessarily make for simple, accessible images. Sometimes things are complicated! If you try to simplify them, you lose too much truth.

What is your art background? (education, experience, etc)

My degree is in Classics. I've been painting full time since 1995.

What is your process for creating your work?

I seem to see one symbol at a time. When I don't know what comes next, I have to set the painting aside rather than force a resolution. It may take six hours or six weeks for the next symbol that comes, depending how much I resist the process and content of the painting. I'm not in control, but I do trust that if you put in the hours, the work comes.

With this last series I made a long-awaited transition to working bigger (the works are
64" wide) and at that size, there is a lot of room for me to develop a story! Sometimes I begin the painting with a question or a problem and spend the rest of the painting reflecting on it.

What is the single most important thing you want to communicate with your work?

Life is big, but don't be so afraid.

What are your career goals?

To continue showing, as long as I can find people who will give me some wall.

What one object has been the most instrumental in helping you achieve what you have so far?

My camera. It lets me see work fresh without having to put it away for six months.

Tell me three random things about you.

Through showing my art, I found out that if you tell the truth about your life, in fact the world does not end. And people even thank you for it. It's amazing.
I can paint without a dog in my studio, but it doesn't make for a balanced day.
I'm reading Michael Taussig's _What Color Is The Sacred_ and so far I'm just thrilled. He's addressing why we feel about color as we do, and how color has come to mean what it does.

I recently sold a large 36" x 48" painting and thought I would document my packing process for shipping!

Here you can see how we first layered parchment paper over the entire painting. We attached them together with staples using hospital corners, so that nothing was actually affixed to the painting itself. (you can see the note I tied to the stretcher bar, for the new owner) I like parchment paper best because there is no worry about wax or paper residue accidentally sticking to the painting. I just need to find a cheap source for larger sheets!

We then layered the front and the back of the painting with a flat sheet of corrugated cardboard. Another layer used blueboard insulation. Its light, cheap, and very sturdy - its also used as modeling base for model railroad builders and ball joint doll makers!

We taped those three layers together with regular box tape and then cut up an unbroken box, and used its corners to protect the entire new bundle. Corners can be the most vulnerable part of a painting in transit.

We procured a very large mirror box from Pier 1, and placed the whole bundle into it, stuffing large quantities of crumpled newspaper around it. I'm sure we could have used lighter packing material, but this was what we had on hand that day - and it was free! (I painted out the printed info on the box, to minimize any shipping confusion)

We then dropped it off with Fed Ex Ground and sent it on its way. I'm glad to report that it arrived safe and sound. :)

Work in progress

I'm working on a new painting for my Losing Lydia series, that profiles the 5 stages of grief. This one is in its infancy here and I'm just starting to build up the layers.

I'm hoping to knock out some of these paintings in record time. The last year spent doing smaller works has really helped to refine some of my processes and experiment with new techniques. Im already noticing the difference and all that work is paying off. I didn't realize how much it had impacted me, while I was working last year, but I'm really pleased that I gave myself the time to "futz around".

Inspiration of the Month!

After a hiatus that was longer than I'd like, I'm getting my artistic 'feet' wet again, both online and in my studio. So while this isn't the beginning of the month, when I like to post these, I'm hoping that better late than never still holds true.

I'm really excited to bring you the work of this amazing artist. As someone who loves symbolism within my own artwork, I am especially moved by the beauty, grace and esoteric nature of Gail Potocki's paintings.

What are your main inspirations in art?
I am inspired by the symbolist painters of the late 19th and early 20th century for their ability to intrique the viewer with their sense of mystery and silence within their work. I am also inspired by the fragility and beauty of nature as well as the unexplainable.

What is your art background? (education, experience, etc)
I studied at the School of Representational Art in Chicago which focuses on the traditional craft of figure drawing and painting.

What is your process for creating your work?
Sometimes I am inspired by something that I have read that effects me emotionally. I then try to translate the feelings and idea symbolically in my work. Other times I start with a image that I am attracted to and build a story around it.

What is the single most important thing you want to communicate with your work?
Most of my work relates to enviromental themes that I think urgently need to be brought in to society's consciousness. I hope to transfer the effect these issues have on me to the viewer.

What are your career goals?
I would be happy if my work would help bring some of these environmental issues to light and inspire people to respect the planet. My other career goal is to not starve!

What one object has been the most instrumental in helping you achieve what you have so far?
I have stuck to my own aesthetic and tried not to be influenced by what is going on in the art world. This has helped me to strengthen my own visual language and kept my work honest.

Tell me three random things about you.

I love oddities from the 19th century so my apartment looks like something from the Addams Family.
I love animals and am fascinated by birds.
I don't know how to swim.
