i love the idea of sending your son a postcard! when i was in school (during the stone age) my mom wrote me a letter every week. my friends lived mostly within cheap calling distance so i was one of only a few who got actual letters. my friends would rush to the mail boxes on Tuesday so the read could be read in the lunch line.
There really is something special about getting physical mail, isn't there?
When the kids went to summer camp for the first time, many many years ago - I sent them small collaged postcards. My son said it was one of his fondest memories. So when he went off to school, I decided to resurrect it. :)
Like you, as soon as he gets one - he runs around showing everyone what he got. Makes my heart warm.
